Are “piercing” guns used to do piercings at Red Tide Tattoo?
Professional piercers use blade needles to make a small cut that is followed by jewelry insertion. Although they are hollow, the needle does not remove any skin.
“Piercing” guns cause blunt force trauma to the tissue by using a dull piece of jewelry to forcefully push it through the desired area. It can cause injury and tissue damage that can lead to more pain, swelling, and potential scarring.
I’m having issues healing my piercing, what do I do?
Book a consultation for an in-person appointment or fill out the Troubleshooting form for online contact.
What piercings are NOT offered at Red Tide Tattoo?
Genital and Below-the-Belt piercings are not currently being offered.
“Frog-eyes”, horizontal tongue, or “scoop” piercings are not offered.
Surface piercings in high-movement areas are not-offered.
Your piercer reserves the right to deny piercings that are not suited to the client’s anatomy or safety.
If this situation arises, an alternative and safer piercing may be recommended.
Can I get pierced if I’m pregnant?
No, during pregnancy the body’s immune system goes through various changes that have an adverse effect on a healing piercing. If an infection occurs, the pregnancy and/or fetus can be negatively affected.
Healed piercings also have a tendency to have an adverse reaction from the compromised immune system and swelling associated with pregnancy. This may require a larger length of jewelry to accommodate any changes.
Downsizing
Why should I downsize my piercing?
Initial piercings are done with a slightly longer bar to accomodate any swelling made from the procedure. Once the swelling is reduced, the excess length creates more opportunity for catching and snagging.
The piercing angle may change and cause prolonged healing if it is not shortened and replaced with a sterile, properly fitted post.
Make an appointment to downsize your piercing at the recommended time frame set by your piercer.
Troubleshooting
What is an irritation bump?
Irritation bumps, also known as hypertrophic scarring, look like a raised, flesh-colored or pinkish bump that develops around the site of the piercing.
They are most often caused by excess moisture, movement, friction, bumping, or sleeping on the piercing.
Irritation bumps can be treated with safe & proper aftercare.
Please contact us using the troubleshooting form or schedule an appointment to speak to a piercing professional.
What is a keloid?
Keloids are formed from excess collagen and tend to be dense.
They are NOT fluid filled.
Keloids are mostly genetic and tend to be more common in those with more melanated skin.
They are not harmful or require treatment. If a keloid arises and needs to be removed, please contact a healthcare professional for removal/treatment.

What is threadless jewelry?
Threadless or “Press-Fit” Jewelry uses a pin that is inserted into the base or post of the jewelry.
The jewelry end has a strong steel or titanium pin that is slightly bent to create tension that secures the pieces together.
A way to remove this style of jewelry is to pull-apart firmly at both ends.
